[Shacs] switching to mac - need some advice

I've been back on a Mac for (I guess) about four years now. Although I
don't do any coding (thankfully) I do require the ability boot into
multiple OS's, run *nix utils, and run standard email/office applications
(also stuff like encryption/PKI, etc.).
Are you looking at a laptop or desktop? If you are looking for a laptop
I'd go with the MacBook Pro 17" (that's what I have) or the 15". The extra
real estate on helps when you have multiple windows open and the video is
better than a MacBook. Don't do anything less than 2 GB of RAM if you want
to run multiple OS's (especially if you use Parallels or vmware instead of
BootCamp). Get the glossy display if you plan on doing any multimedia.
Regardless of which hard disk you get I'd get the 7200 RPM (if nothing
else the extra cache helps).
I'm not up on the latest desktop line but have a couple Mac Mini's around
the house and am really happy with them....same stuff applies: 2GB of RAM
and the faster HD.
Once you get up and running if you'd like to drop me an email I can send
you a list of apps that a lot of people use and like.
Good Luck,
Kevin

I need to spec a new laptop for myself, and I want to make The Switch
(tm). Would someone please toss me some simple specs for a decent Mac
notebook from a developer's perspective? I'll be doing some degree of
Photoshop'ing and lots of web development. Might run a local apache
or some other web server to run rails and an accompanying IDE. Oh,
and will definitely need to switch over to Windows on occasion, at
least for old times sake...
Advice?
wanna be mac guy,

This signature was created on a Mac...therefore it should look better than
other signatures but will cost you more and doesn't really work in the
enterprise.
