Thanks all for your varied solutions. Had they been ReplyAll (Frey-- you
wanna set the bit to make default reply go to the list?), you could all
learn from my fumblings, but there ya go.
So far, I've got raid card solutions, external storage with built-in raid,
online backup services like Mozy, and this late entry:

I was strongly cautioned against the $30 PNY and encouraged to check out
this $180 3ware.
However, my latest self-discovery is that I'm really looking not only for
modest storage redundancy but for archival services (either online or
something in-house).
In the meantime, in preparation for likely setting up a pair of 550GBs in
raid-1, I went ahead and ordered one drive to tide me over. Gotta meet
business requirements first, and with the baby due in ~1week, business
continuity is everything! :D
