All, the second annual Houston Techfest is coming, September 13th at U of H. I'm pasting in the standard "everyone gets this message" below; for SHSU I'll also say:
Some sponsors are local consulting companies that are hiring. If you are looking for a job, even if you haven't graduated yet, show up. I don't know exactly how it works, because you're not going to show up in a suit and tie, with your resume printed on special paper, at an informal techfest, but there are recruiters there looking for people like you--just the fact that you're willing to attend a technical event on your own time says something to companies. So, show up and talk to the recruiters; just by being there, body-present, you'll stand out. My current employer (consulting company; we do everything in the Microsoft stack and we're all over the board elsewhere) hires entry-level and would prefer six months or more of experience.
Further note to the current students: even if you absolutely hate the technology stacks (Java and/or .NET), show up just to get a bit of flavor, a little bit of the professional (enterprise?) developer culture. It's intimidating at first, but show up anyway. Techfests are unique in that they encourage students to attend. So show up.
I'll be there. That should be reason enough for everyone to attend :)If you plan on attending and want to meet up (current students too), reply back and let me know. I recommend everyone wear garish SHSU orange, that would be awesome.
Don't let the "long drive" be an excuse. The drive to U of H is like 1 hour, and it's all highway. No traffic on a Saturday. This event is worth your time, and is the only event of its kind in Houston this year.
Announcing: Houston Techfest 2008 - 09/13/2008 at U of
H
The second
annual Houston Techfest takes place on Saturday, September 13th,
at the U of H main campus. This year the Techfest has expanded to over fifty
sessions. Make the time to attend!
This is a free, community-driven event that (this year anyway) features
mostly Java-related or .NET-related content, with a smattering of just about
everything else.
This is your only chance to attend such a wide variety of in-depth
sessions, in one place, without getting on a plane and flying
somewhere. If you're bored by flashy tech demos, attend the Methodology,
Security, and ALT.NET (AKA Continuous Improvement) tracks. On the other hand,
if you love flashy tech demos, we've got those too! Lots of them! I'm
also happy to say that most of the sessions cover advanced topics, so if you're
an information nut like me, you'll find something new at the Techfest. And it's
not all business either; there'll be fun sessions on XNA, Deep Zoom, and
Robotics Studio. Don't forget, the price is right!
