Lifehacker.com just posted the 5 best antivirus applications (as determined by the site users) yesterday.  3 of the 5 offer freeware versions (one is AVG)...

cheap guy here again, thinking I can get anything for free..  so AVG has been good for a couple years now, but as you know, it appears to be going pay-only, forcing an upgrade at the end of June:
