New AVG Malware Scanner Distorts Website Traffic Measurements
Malware scanners are supposed to be good for the web - or are they? Our
friends at The Register report that the new AVG LinkScanner
<http://free.grisoft.com/ww.faq.num-1241> malware scanner (a part of AVG
version 8 antivirus), which checks search engine results before a user
clicks on them, is making a hash
<http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/06/13/avg_scanner_skews_web_traffic_numbe
rs/> of website traffic stats. Some websites are reporting traffic
increases of 80%, but unlike actual clicks, no human eyeballs are seeing the
pages - and, to make matters worse, website owners must pay for the extra
traffic, even though they're not getting actual page views, ad clicks, or
anything else. Web site administrators will want to read on to page

and why it's a pain.

Virus free for a week or so now.. but what's with the LinkScanner? Is there
a way to disable it without triggering that alarm-status icon in the system
tray?

Thanks All.. Especially Wade for pointing me right into the free upgrade--
before clicking, I tried finding it myself and still came up empty-handed.
I'm not looking to sniff out spyware, but I may put it on my wife's computer
;)
Keoowwwwnn-- thanks for reminding me to visit lifehacker again. When I
first got into a SmartPhone, I wasn't sure what to do with myself until I
found lifehacker.com! :O

Lifehacker.com just posted the 5 best antivirus applications (as determined
by the site users) yesterday. 3 of the 5 offer freeware versions (one is
AVG)...

Hope this helps.

cheap guy here again, thinking I can get anything for free.. so AVG has
been good for a couple years now, but as you know, it appears to be going
pay-only, forcing an upgrade at the end of June:

any suitable alternatives that have done you well?
