[StudyAbroad] Language Scholarships - Boren Awards & Critical Language Scholarship

If you are interested in studying languages abroad there are two scholarships you can't miss, especially if you want to work for Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, Department of State, or the Intelligence Community!


·         Boren Awards<https://borenawards.org/> - an initiative of the National Security Education Program, to provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. Boren awards graduate students up to $30,000 and undergraduates up to $20,000.

o   Application deadline: Undergrad February 7, 2019 and graduate January 30, 2019.

o   On-Campus Information Session: October 9 at 4pm in CHSS C070.


·         Critical Language Scholarship<https://www.clscholarship.org/> - The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 15 critical languages. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains. The CLS Program is part of a U.S. government effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical foreign languages. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period, and later apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers.

o   Available languages:

§  Azerbaijani, Bangla, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu: Beginning, advanced beginning, intermediate and advanced levels.

§  Arabic, Persian and Portuguese: Advanced beginning, intermediate and advanced levels.

§  Chinese, Japanese, and Russian: Intermediate and advanced levels.

o   Application deadline: November 27, 2018 by 7pm CST
