I wish that I had some advice for Erin, I, too, have had difficulties moving
into the practice of music therapy because I have needed to maintain a
full-time job to keep my medical insurance.
On a related note, and in response to earlier comments, I have to say that I
don't know what "not enough music therapists to go around" means. I have
been searching for a job for three years, have my master's degree from NYU,
great recommendations, and a fair amount of clinical experience. I still
have not found a job as a music therapist. Perhaps I misunderstood the
comments, and I don't mean to oversimplify the richness of the other points
made. Maybe it wasn't meant in reference to the job market per se, but the
needs of the population for music therapy - in which case I would
wholeheartedly agree.
The reason I write this is because I would like to know - is there an area in
the country where there are lots of jobs open? I would relocate for the
right job. I am currently in the NYC area. I am familiar with all of the
music therapy web sites and regularly search them for positions, as well as
contact universities and search general employment, try to create my own
opportunities and positions. If anyone knows of resources that I might not
be aware of or of openings, I would appreciate any information you have.
Thank you so much.
