I too have some ideas about the issue of musical competency.  It seems that
we should require some standards for musical competency to successfully comple
te a MT internship.  I don't consider it reasonable to attempt to measure
musical performance competency on any written exam.  The internship provides
the opportunity to evaluate and (continue to) work on these skills.  I do
agree that a MT must be musically proficient to be able to focus on THE
CLIENT's therapeutic needs.  I do not, however, consider MT sessions to be
performance opportunities for the therapist.  I have found it important to
participate personally in a performing (vocal) group along with my MT work.
That is how I maintain my own personal musicianship.  This is a very
important topic for dialogue!
