You are right.  Sometimes there are not many choices and the choices are
not convienent.  However, there is at least one master's of mt program that
I am aware of that offers their courses in 4-5-6 day intensives with papers
and projects due later.  One class might meet for 5 days, send in the
project and paper and go on the the next class.  That type of program is
designed for the working professional who might have to travel.  
 
Temple University is set up largely in this fashion.  Several of my
classmates traveled from CA and other states out west once or twice a
sememster and earned their MMT's over a longer period.  Check them out.  It
might be an option.  I'm not sure what other universities are doing this,
and there are pros and cons to each set up.  I hope you find what works
best for you.
