Dear Master's Level Students,

I know you are busy. I am asking that you take about 8 minutes to participate in a study on counselor competency in working with transgender individuals. You need not have ever counseled a transgender individual to participate. Please note that ONLY master's level clinical students are eligible to participate. The study will run from February 19nd to June 30th of 2009. Please participate only once. Your help in this project is greatly appreciated. Please read the informed consent below before you proceed to the actual study. You will be asked to enter the name of your university/college and to agree to the informed consent (below) before the brief survey can be accessed.

Informed Consent.

You are being asked to participate in a research study concerning counselor competency with transgender clients. The purpose of this study is to better inform the counselor training process regarding transgender issues. Specifically, few mental health training programs incorporate transgender issues into program curricula and this study seeks to investigate how this affects trainee competency. You will be asked to respond to 49 (multiple choice or fill in the blank) survey items and it is expected that completion of this survey will take between 10-20 minutes. No foreseeable risk of either mental or physical injury or discomfort is associated with participation in this study. Should you choose to participate and experience stress as a result of your participation in this study you are encouraged to consult your university's counseling center. By participating in this study you will be helping to identify the status of transgendered issues in training curricula. You must be at least 18 years old to participate in this study. All data collected will be anonymous. Data collected in this study will be held as confidential and used only in aggregate form. Data will be maintained in an electronic file by the primary researcher for at least two years. Your participation in this study is completely voluntary and you are free to discontinue at anytime. Completion of the entire survey is greatly appreciated. For questions about your rights as a research subject, please contact Research Compliance, Sponsored Programs Office, Ball State University, Muncie, IN 47306, (765) 285-5070, irb at bsu.edu.
