I don't know how serious they are, but this announcement suggests that they'll want to know if you want to attend by the close of bidness today, Wednesday. But I have it on good authority--the Associate Provost herself--that you are entirely welcome to attend.

Cheers,
Rody

The Office of the Vice President and Associate Provost for Diversity announces its Enhancing Diversity Seminar Series speaker, Dr. Derald Wing Sue, Professor of Psychology and Education at Columbia University

MICROAGGRESSIONS AND MARGINALITY: Manifestation, Dynamics, and Impact
October 6, 2014
9:30am – 11:00am
MSC 2406A

New research on the manifestation, dynamics, and harmful impact of microaggressions on socially devalued groups have become of high importance to the field of education and psychology. Microaggressions are the everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, which communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership. In many cases, these hidden messages may invalidate the group identities, demean them on a personal or group level, communicate they are lesser human beings, suggest they do not belong with the majority group, or relegate them to inferior status and treatment.

While microaggressions are generally discussed from the perspective of race and racism, any marginalized group in our society may become targets: people of color, women, LGBTQ populations, those with disabilities and so on. Dr. Sue will:
• Present research and perspectives on the manifestation, psychological dynamics, and impact of microaggressions on the well-being of marginalized groups
• Reveal how microaggressions create disparities in education, employment, and health care
• Suggest strategies to overcome microaggressions on an individual, institutional, societal, and cultural level

About the Speaker
Dr. Derald Wing Sue, Professor of Psychology and Education in the Department of Counseling and Clinical Psychology at Teachers College and the School of Social Work, Columbia University
Dr. Sue can truly be described as a pioneer in the field of multicultural psychology and education, multicultural counseling and therapy, and the psychology of racism/antiracism. He has done extensive multicultural research and writing in psychology and education, and his theories and concepts have paved the way for a generation of younger scholars interested in minority mental health and multicultural psychology. He has authored over 150 publications, 17 books, and numerous media productions. His commitment to multiculturalism has been obvious and his contributions have forced the field to seriously question the monocultural knowledge base of its theories and practices. As evidence of his impact, Dr. Sue's book, Counseling the Culturally Diverse: Theory and Practice, 2013, 6th Edition (w/David Sue - John Wiley & Sons Publishers), has been identified as the most frequently cited publication in the multicultural field.
