[Psychmasters] SHSU Counseling Center Helpline Volunteers needed for January 2020

SHSU Counseling Center will be launching a Helpline February 2020 and is actively recruiting responsible, dependable people who want to listen and help others. Helpline volunteers will provide confidential listening services, crisis and suicide intervention, and information to SHSU students and the community.

You may pick up an application at the Counseling Center's reception desk or email Dr. Shantha Stokes at sys003 at shsu.edu<mailto:sys003 at shsu.edu> to request an application. Application deadline is Friday, November 22nd.



Once you have submitted your application it will be reviewed by the Helpline Committee. The next step is a one-hour interview with the committee. After the interview, candidates will be notified by email of their status.



If you are accepted to volunteer, a mandatory all day training will take place January 13th  and 14th.  Training is mandatory, so please consider your availability before applying.  Training includes, but is not limited to, a combination of lecture and interactive presentations on beginning counseling and listening skills, how to handle different types of calls, suicide assessment and crisis intervention, diversity and when and how to make a referral. Presentations cover the types of concerns that college students may experience, how to listen to these concerns, and how to refer callers to available resources. During training, there is a minimum of two hours of role-play training in small groups to practice and equip volunteers with the skills needed to respond to callers.
