        TSBSWE’s Decision Regarding Social Workers





In a joint meeting Monday, the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners (TSBSWE) and the Behavioral Health Executive Council (BHEC) accepted language from the Governor removing protections against discrimination for sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression from the Social Work Code of Conduct. This decision was made without reposting the proposed changes for public comment, as is traditionally done when changes are substantive.

TPA leadership is aware and actively partnering with the National Association of Social Workers-Texas as well as our other mental health colleagues to address this serious concern of overreach by the Governor's office and ensure that precedent is not set here that would quell public comments during the rulemaking process.

        TPA Submits Comments to the House Committee on Public Health





This week, TPA submitted public comments to the Texas House Committee on Public Health in response to two interim charges.

Interim Charge 1 tasks the Committee with monitoring the implementation of HB 1501, relating to the creation of BHEC. In our letter, we address the wide disparity in fees between the provider types now licensed under BHEC.

Interim Charge 3 tasks the Committee with reviewing suicide prevention efforts and the provision of behavioral health care services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Relating to suicide prevention, we ask the Committee expand access to timely mortality data to allow psychologists to study interventions and outcomes. In order to meet the needs of Texans with IDD, we recommend require improvements in the areas of education and training as well as funding, with bridging and collaboration among agencies and systems. We also highlighted our relevant legislative agenda items and the importance of telehealth expansion.
