As Black American’s therapy utilization rates continue to grow, the need for culturally competent practice also increases. This includes increased attention on affirmative practices with Black transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) couples and families. This presentation will explore ethical issues related to affirmative care and the unique experiences of Black TGNC couples and families. It will offer affirmative strategies based in feminist and Afrocentric paradigms to expand couples and family counseling inclusivity.

Learning Objectives:

1. Detail specific issues impacting the therapy experience of Black TGNC couples and families.

2. Identify supportive practices in working with Black TGNC couples and families.

Presenter:
Dr. Kimber Shelton is a licensed psychologist and owner of KLS Counseling & Consulting Services. She provides psychotherapy, professional consultation, workshops and trainings, and mentoring. Dr. Shelton specializes in the areas of cultural competence, ethnic minority and LGBTQ issues, trauma, and relationship concerns. Additionally, she serves as an adjunct instructor in Yorkville University’s Masters in Counseling Psychology program. Dr. Shelton previously served as the co-chair of the Texas Psychological Association Diversity Division and as a committee member on the American Psychological Association Committee on Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity. She earned her PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Georgia and MS in Mental Health Counseling from Niagara University.
