The IN-PERSON Spring 2022 Graduate/Undergraduate Instructor Academy (GUIA) <https://www.shsu.edu/centers/academic-success-center/GUIA/> will be held on January 10th and 11th. The event is in a conference format with sessions to select from between 8am and 5pm both days.

Select sessions will be offered virtually for online graduate students seeking TACS certification (FERPA, Title IX, Classroom Mgmt, SHSU Online Certification, Keynote, and a few additional sessions). In-person attendance is preferred.

Our theme will be 'Sí, Se Puede!', meaning 'Yes, We Can!' Particular emphasis will be placed on our journey in moving from enrolling to serving our Hispanic student population.

This event is open to graduate instructors, grad/undergrad instructional assistants, teaching assistants, lab assistants, tutors, mentors and more. Pretty much any graduate or undergraduate hired to assist the university with instructional practices is welcome. Participants can earn hours/credits toward TACS certification<https://www.shsu.edu/dept/graduate-studies/resources/graduate-student-professional-development.html>, Grad/Undergrad Online Instructor certification, HAVEN<https://www.shsu.edu/dept/counseling/lgbtq-resources.html> (LGBTQIA+ ally training), CRLA-ASC certification (tutoring/mentoring), IDEA<https://www.shsu.edu/today@sam/T@S/article/2020/idea-certificate-program> certification (Inclusion/Diversity/Equity/Inclusion/Access)

Please be on the look-out (or ask) for instructions/mandates from your departmental and/or center supervisor. They may wish for you to attend certain sessions or join them for a content specific meeting. The majority of sessions will be live and in-person. A few sessions will be recorded for completion later that week (i.e. FERPA/Title IX/TACS Info).

WHAT IS GUIA?

The Graduate/Undergraduate Instructor Academy (GUIA) is a professional development event, designed to assist graduate adjunct instructors, instructional assistants, graduate assistants, lab instructors, lab assistants, teaching assistants, tutors, mentors, supplemental instructors, and more with instructional training and resources. The GUIA event is designed to aid departments and centers in affording student employees with consistent, campus wide, professional development to better support student learning and success. GUIA is not intended to subsume center, departmental, or content specific training. It does, however, aim to streamline training for students that work in several departments/centers across campus – thus reducing the chances for replicated efforts.

The goals for the academy are to:

1) Provide student participants with quality, pertinent, and/or research based professional development (e.g. conflict resolution, classroom management, etc.)

2) Increase efficiency with institutional resources (e.g. pool campus resources for purchasing participant food, bring experts to one meeting for greater impact and consistency)

3) Make student participants aware of their legal/professional obligations (e.g. FERPA,Title IX)

4) Make student participants aware of the various support services across campus (e.g. Food Pantry, Counseling Center, etc.; Because students are more likely to relay needs and hardships to instructors their own age)

5) Provide participants with greater awareness of diversity in the classroom AND training to create a more equitable/inclusive learning environment
