Join us for the launch of the new “Initiative on Slavery, Race, and Reconciliation” at Sam Houston State University. Panelists will discuss the role that enslaved African Americans played in the construction of Austin Hall, the legacy of slavery and segregation, and ways to recognize this history and move toward reconciliation with this past.

Historian and SHSU alum Phillip Luke Sinitiere will discuss W.E.B. Du Bois's life and its significance to African-American and global Black history. Draw upon his extensive archival research, Dr. Sinitiere will cover some of the lesser-known facets of Du Bois's life, particularly from later in Du Bois’s life when Du Bois was a world-renowned Pan-Africanist activist and scholar working in concert with his wife, Shirley Graham Du Bois.

This event brings together philosophers and political theorist who examine questions of value informed by the history of Black thought. Dr. Wolflink will discuss her recent book on valuing, drawing on 19th century Black feminist Anna Julia Cooper. Dr. Miranda will discuss his work on Afro-diasporic depression and how Black thinkers help us redefine happiness. Dr. Chevannes will present his work on how Black and deaf communities reconceive political speech and conceptions of modernity.

Chenelle John Heard SHSU graduate and assistant professor of English at the University of the Virgin Islands will be reading from her most recent collection of poetry. Her poetry focuses on the West African roots of her Afro-Caribbean heritage and upbringing while dealing with discovery and reconnection to memories through nature and spirituality.

Through a historical fiction short film about the 1943 Beaumont Race Riot and a documentary about the oldest neighborhood in Beaumont, viewers have gained insight via the visual medium that never existed previously about African Americans in Southeast Texas. Filmmaker Gordon Williams, from Lamar University, will be screening the films and discussing the history they portray and the process of their creation.
