Greetings Sigma Tau Delters.

Well, not a large turn out for the July 30th meeting, but I understand
that many of you are away for summer or busy with finals. Lorie, your PR
officer and I were able to work through many items on the agenda.

Minutes of Meeting July 30, 2004:

1)	Lorie reported that she is working with the graphics dept. in the
Student Activities office to create a unique poster for our 2004-2005
year. The graphic artists are also cleaning up graphics supplied by the
National website for use by our chapter. The graphic designed by Lorie
and the graphics dept. will be used throughout the year to promote the
organization.
2)	Our primary goal this fall is to get members involved and Sigma Tau
Delta visible on campus. A wide range of activities and programs will be
arranged to this end.
3)	Meetings: Tentatively, we are going to continue the current days,
times, and location of Sigma Tau Delta meetings. We will make sure that
as many as would like to attend can be present on these days. Sigma Tau
Delta officers and committee chairs will meet the first Monday of each
month at 4:30 in the English faculty lounge. All members will meet on the
third Monday of each month at 4:30 in the English faculty lounge. Pizza
and drinks will be provided at regular member meetings and door prizes
will be given. Meeting dates that fall on holidays will be scheduled for
the following Monday. Committee chairs will arrange meetings with
committee members as necessary.
4)	We will set up a table for the Administration and Organization Fair,
Sept. 8 at 11am. We need volunteers to staff the table throughout the
day. The Historian and the PR officers will work on preparing a display
for the table. We will use the Sigma Tau Delta wooden "sculpture"
currently in the window box in the Evans building. We will have Sigma Tau
Delta brochures, newsletters, contact sheets, committee sign up sheets,
examples of publications, applications, and any other items we can think
of at the table. We will also have pencils and other items to give away
to those who visit our station. We will ask Dr. Child and others in the
English Dept. if they would like us to also promote The Writer's Forum and
other areas of interest at our table.
5)	There are 4 events where the presence of our members would be
beneficial. These events have a high turn out, and although we will not
have a table set up during these events, we can wear our shirts and
mention our organization as we mingle. The events are: Raven Fest (Aug.
22, 6pm, Quad), Bearkat Mania (Aug. 25 & 26, 10am-3pm, LSC Ballroom), RHA
Party in the Pit (Aug. 25, 9pm, Old Main Pit), and Casino Night (Aug.
31, 6pm, LSC Ballroom).
We have a limited number of large or extra large T-shirts that members can
have if they are going to one of these events.
6)	We will purchase a Sigma Tau Banner ($42.00) and brochures (500 @ .15
each) from the national organization. We will purchase tongue twister
pencils and other items to give away at our table from Oriental Trading
Co. We will look into getting our logo on some items and getting
donations from businesses such as Office Depot and Office Max (who is
opening a store soon in Huntsville)
7)	We will publish a newsletter twice each semester. These will be
available to members at info table and at meetings. When our website is
up and running, the newsletter will be available in PDF format online.
8)	We will have two new shirts designed. One will be a black polo with
the Sigma Tau Delta logo embroiders in gold. The other will be a t-shirt
with our 2004-2005 graphic. Information on the availability and cost of
these will be forthcoming.
9)	Fundraisers were discussed—Bake sales will be held weekly or
bi-monthly. We discussed having a BBQ sale. We will have a pie-throwing
booth during homecoming week. It will be a cut out of Shakespeare. We
need professors, TA’s and members to volunteer. Date and time TBA.
10)	Our first Meet and Greet will be Sept. 4 at the Tailgate party at
Bowers stadium for the first football game. We will have brisket or
fajitas.
11)	We discussed having a Sigma Tau Delta banquet in the Spring where
members will be recognized for achievements, professors honored for
excellence in teaching, and new members inducted into Sigma Tau Delta.
12)	The PR officer will be responsible for the window boxes in the Evans
building.
13)	We discussed the possibility of a masked Halloween Ball, but we are
concerned with time constraints and cost. Any ideas?
14)	Banned Book Week is Sept. 25-Oct 2. The SW Region’s designated
service day is Sept. 29th , and the service project is to promote
awareness by having an information table and passing out lists of banned
and challenged books and candy with the name of one of these books
attached. (Member, Jennifer Sanders will be chairing this event.)
15)	We discussed selling candy hearts and handmade cards the week of
Valentine’s Day.
16)	Other items on the agenda not yet dealt with:
Sigma Tau Delta Service Project Grant (up to $300), deadline Oct. 8th
Service Projects: New Waverly Public Library Cook-off, Sept. 24th-25th.
Care packages for the armed services in Iraq.
Finals study station with coffee, juice, and snacks.
Website—We need a webmaster. Contact me if you are interested in serving
in this position.
Academic Workshops—Grad School, Getting Published, etc.
Brown bag lunches (provided by Sigma Tau Delta) with guest speakers.

As you can see, we covered many of the items on the agenda, but there a
many more to be discussed. We need members to chair or join committees so
that we can have a successful year.

Our next planning meetings will be announced soon (tentatively Aug. 16th
and 17th or 23rd and 24th in one of the LSC meeting rooms. I will let
you know.) In the meantime, e-mail me with comments, suggestions, or just
to let me know that you are interested in one or more of these areas.

Enjoy what is left of summer. I hope to meet with many of you soon.
