[Southwestern Region]

August 8, 2013

Dear Chapter Sponsors and Officers,

The Southwestern Regional Meeting<http://www.english.org/sigmatd/events/regional/index.shtml#language> of the Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society will once again be held in conjunction with the University of Central Oklahoma's Language and Linguistics Student Conference<http://www.uco.edu/la/english/llsc/index.asp> on Saturday, November 16. Sigma Tau Delta members are encouraged to attend and to present at this very special international academic conference hosted by and specifically organized for students.

The regional meeting will take place following the conference closing remarks on Saturday afternoon. Sigma Tau Delta members will have an opportunity to meet and network with the Southwestern Regent, Student Representative, Associate Student Representative, and other Sigma Tau Delta officials, as well as to attend a professional development workshop. The meeting and workshop will offer valuable information about chapter and professional development, and provide a chance for members to connect with their regional leadership and neighboring chapters. There will be additional opportunities to mingle at a special luncheon session during the conference and a social dinner after the regional meeting and workshop.

The deadline for conference submissions is coming up very soon (Sept 16), but students are only expected to submit a short abstract, not a completed paper. This should make meeting the deadline possible, especially if chapters work together to develop their abstracts. In fact, groups that wish to present together on a single topic are invited to submit one abstract for a group panel presentation, which makes submission even easier. This would be an excellent opportunity to encourage chapter members to develop papers for Sigma Tau Delta's current Common Reader, We the Animals<http://www.english.org/sigmatd/events/commonreader/index.shtml>. Those papers could also be submitted to the Sigma Tau Delta international convention<http://www.english.org/sigmatd/conv/index.shtml>, where they would be eligible for special Common Reader Convention Awards<http://www.english.org/sigmatd/events/commonreader/conventionaward.shtml>.

Finally, and perhaps most exciting, the Southwestern Regent will offer partial registration reimbursement to eligible Sigma Tau Delta presenters, and Sigma Tau Delta non-presenters may attend the entire conference, including the Sigma Tau Delta regional meeting and workshop, completely free of charge. Society members will be happy to help chapters traveling from out of town with arrangements for roommates, ride sharing, and other cost-saving measures, making this conference an incredibly affordable option for all chapter members, whether they wish to submit abstracts or not.

Visit the Language and Linguistics Student Conference<http://www.uco.edu/la/english/llsc/sigma-tau-delta.asp> website for conference details, including the complete call for papers.

For more information about the Southwestern Regional Meeting and workshop, registration reimbursement, finding roommates, or other Sigma Tau Delta topics, contact Lauren Brandeberry at lbrandeberry at niu.edu<mailto:lbrandeberry at niu.edu>.

Sincerely,
Ericka Hoagland<mailto:hoaglande at sfasu.edu>, Southwestern Regent
