On International Women's Day and in celebration of Women's History Month, join the College of Humanities and Social Sciences Diversity and Inclusion Committee, Department of World Languages & Cultures, SHSU MFA Program in Creative Writing & Let's Get Loud! for a 5p Women's Poetry Slam and Poetry & a 6p Poetry & Performance by Jasminne Mendez (with an introduction by Dr. Trevor Boffone).

5:00 p.m. WOMEN'S POETRY SLAM!, hosted by Let's Get Loud!
The slam will feature spoken word and slam poets in a competition-style poetry slam (for less than 3 minutes each), with guest judges Jasminne Mendez, Trevor Boffone and Mouthfeel Press publisher Maria Miranda Maloney.

6:00 pm AN AFRO-LATINA IN TEXAS: POETRY AND PERFORMANCE BY JASMINNE MENDEZ

Dr. Trevor Boffone will introduce the 50 Playwrights Project and Jasminne Mendez and facilitate a Q&A from the audience after the performance.

JASMINNE MENDEZ is a performance poet, actress, teacher and published writer. She captivates audiences through the passion and energy of her words and voice. Mendez has performed her poetry in venues all around Houston, including the MFAH, Rice and the Alley Theatre. She has shared the stage with respected writers and poets, notably, Sandra Cisneros and Taylor Mali. Mendez has been published both nationally and internationally and her first multi-genre memoir 'Island of Dreams' was published by Floricanto Press in November of 2013. She is currently working on her second memoir 'Thick Skinned' about living life with chronic illness. DR. TREVOR BOFFONE is a Houston-based scholar, educator, writer, dramaturg, and producer. He is a member of the National Steering Committee for the Latina/o Theatre Commons and the founding editor of the 50 Playwrights Project. Trevor has a Ph.D. in Latin@ theater and literature from the Department of Hispanic Studies at the University of Houston where he holds a Graduate Certificate in Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies. Trevor researches the intersections of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and community in Chican@ and Latin@ theater and performance. His first book project, 'Eastside Latinidad: Josefina López, Community, and Social Change in Los Angeles,' is a study of theater and performance in East Los Angeles, focusing primarily on Josefina López's role as a playwright, mentor, and community leader in Boyle Heights.?
