Dear colleagues,

As part of CHSS Diversity and Inclusion Committee's Hispanic Heritage Month programming this fall and with the support of the English Department and the CHSS Dean's Office, I am bringing visiting writer Xochitl-Julisa Bermejo to campus for a craft talk on building literary community, poetry slam and reading on October 9 in Austin Hall.

I'm hoping that you could help us spread the word about Bermejo's visit and the poetry slam, which will be hosted by student spoken word and performance poetry group, Let's Get Loud. We're looking for ten participants for the slam (details below) and interested participants can sign up by contacting me. I've attached the poster for the event as well as the Hispanic Heritage Month poster listing all four events planned the CHSS Diversity and Inclusion Committee. If you would like more posters, please let me know. I hope to see you there and please let me know if you have any questions.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

3:30-4:45p Building Literary Community: a Craft Talk with Xochitl-Julisa Bermejo, Austin Hall

5PM Hispanic Heritage Month Poetry Slam, hosted by Let's Get Loud!, Austin Hall

The slam will feature spoken word and slam poets in a competition-style poetry slam (for less than 3 minutes each), with guest judges and prizes for the winners.

There will be two rounds of poetry slam, so poets should bring two poems up to three minutes each. Everyone will compete in the first round; the top contenders will move to the second round. The top three winners will get prizes. You do not have to be Hispanic/Latinx to sign-up to slam, but your poems should be on the theme of Hispanic heritage. There are 10 slots available for poets. Poets can sign up to participate by contacting Dr. Ching-In Chen at ching-in at shsu.eduor 936-294-1944<tel:(936)%20294-1944>. 6PM Poetry and Prose Reading featuring Xochitl-Julisa Bermejo, Austin Hall

7PM Book Signing & Reception, Austin Hall

ABOUT OUR FEATURED WRITER:

Xochitl-Julisa Bermejo is the author of 'Posada: Offerings of Witness and Refuge' (Sundress Publications 2016), and former Steinbeck Fellow, Poets & Writers California Writers Exchange winner and Barbara Deming Memorial Fund grantee. Bermejo is a first generation Chicana born and raised in San Gabriel, California, who fondly remembers weekends spent haciendo traviesos with her cousins around her grandparents' Boyle Heights home.

She's received residencies from Hedgebrook and Ragdale Foundation and is a member of the Macondo Writers' Workshop. Her work is published in 'Acentos Review,' 'CALYX,' 'crazyhorse,' and 'The James Franco Review' among others.

In Los Angeles, she is a cofounder of Women Who Submit, a literary organization using social media and community events to empower women authors to submit work for publication, and curates the quarterly reading series HITCHED.

'Posada: Offerings of Witness and Refuge' is a feminist collection of poetry straddling borders, and arose when daughter of Mexican immigrants, Xochitl-Julisa Bermejo, traveled from Los Angeles to the Tucson-Sector of the U.S.-Mexico border in August 2011 to volunteer with the humanitarian aid organization, No More Deaths. She hoped to gain a concrete understanding of the "wall," and the result was a book illustrating a speaker driven to activism by a need to honor her family's journey.
