Secondary Traumatization

Thanks to Roia Rafieyan for discussing the very important effect of secondary or vicarious traumatization.
An effect similar to this can occur when working with persons with most any type of disability. If the
therapist percieves
the plight of the individual as "hopeless", then that therapist is in danger of developing a similar attitude.
When we really get to know our clientele, we learn that the vast majority of them do not consider their
situations hopless -
far from it, most of them are very positive.
If after getting to know a person well, we conclude that his/her attitude is extremely negative, then it is our
job as therapist to
demonstrate a positive attitude and to guard against letting the negative "vibes" from the client influence our
own thinking.
