The Family Attachment Lab, directed by Dr. Shelley Riggs, is seeking three 10-hour Graduate Research Assistants for the Spring of 2022. The study, “Validation of the Lewis Couple and Family Evaluation Scales in a Community Sample of Families,” is funded by the Jerry M. Lewis Mental Health Research Foundation. After receiving training and obtaining reliability, these paid GRAs will code family interaction tasks using the Lewis Couple & Family Evaluation Scales coding scheme during spring 2022.

The study represents an extension of a previous project funded by the Timberlawn Psychiatric Research Foundation that explored interrelationships among family systems and attachment constructs during middle childhood (Family System Predictors of Psychological Well-being in Middle Childhood). Dubbed the Family and Kid Connection (FKC) project by my graduate students, that original project included 20-minute family interaction tasks, which were video-recorded and coded using the System for Coding Interactions and Family Functioning (SCIFF; Lindahl & Malik, 2000). The purpose of the current study is to provide evidence of scale reliability, construct validity (i.e., convergent, discriminant), and concurrent validity for the Lewis Scales using the archival data collected in the FKC project. Importantly, this project will extend the reliability and validation findings for the Lewis Scales from observational coding of couple interactions to observational coding of family interactions with a community sample of married, two-parent families with one or more children from the FKC sample.

If interested and highly motivated to learn about behavioral observation coding and observable family system interactions, please:
